QUICK ANSWER

How much alcohol do you need for a wedding?

Start with drinking guests, estimate demand for the full service window, divide those servings by drink preferences, then round up to purchasable packages. For 100 total guests with 85 drinking guests at a five-hour evening reception, this model produces 362–474 planned servings; the Recommended plan is 402.

    Count drinking guests

Total guests minus underage guests and known adult non-drinkers.

  2. 02
    Estimate the service window

1.5 drinks in hour one, then 0.75 per later hour, adjusted for the event and crowd.

  3. 03
    Build a shopping list

Split servings into beer, wine, spirits, and other choices, then round to bottles, packs, and cases.

These are inventory-planning estimates, not consumption targets. Actual needs vary.

Tell us about your guests

We calculate from drinking guests, not the full headcount.

This changes pace, not attendance. We still count 100 drinking guests; the profile adjusts how many drinks per guest are planned.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Wedding bar planning, in plain English

How much alcohol do I need for 100 wedding guests?+

For 100 total guests with 85 drinking guests at a five-hour evening reception, this model estimates 362 servings for a Lean plan, 402 for Recommended, and 474 for Safe before package rounding. Your result changes with non-drinkers, event length, crowd profile, and preferences.

How many drinks per guest should I plan for?+

This calculator starts with 1.5 drinks in the first hour and 0.75 per later hour, then adjusts for time of day, crowd profile, waste, and planning scenario. It is an inventory estimate—not a target for anyone to consume.

How many bottles of wine do I need?+

Divide expected wine servings by five for a standard 750 mL bottle, then round up by red, white, rosé, and sparkling preference.

How much liquor do I need?+

A 750 mL bottle supplies about 16 standard 1.5-ounce pours; a 1.75 L bottle supplies about 39. Signature recipes can change both spirit and mixer quantities.

What if some guests don't drink?+

Enter underage guests and adult non-drinkers separately. The calculator removes both before estimating alcoholic servings while retaining the total headcount for ice and supplies.

Should I buy extra alcohol?+

Compare the added cost of the Safe plan with your tolerance for running low. If unopened returns are confirmed, the financial downside of extra inventory can be much smaller.

How much ice do I need?+

The calculator uses 1.5 pounds per total guest for drink ice, the midpoint of common catered-event guidance. Add separate ice for displays and coolers.

How does reception length affect quantity?+

The first hour is front-loaded, then every additional service hour adds a lower steady rate. Include cocktail hour and after-party time if the same inventory serves them.

Is it better to overbuy if unopened alcohol can be returned?+

Often, yes—but only after the retailer confirms that your state, product types, condition, receipt, and return window qualify.
